What did you guys think? I picked it up randomly and loved it. Personally, I thought it was much better written and more entertaining than Twilight...|||They were the most amazing books I have ever read. The setting of the book inspired me to do more research into the setting of my own novel.
I loved the underlying message. I loved how deep it was. The real message of the book is the struggle of power between man and woman. The Rakshana obviously represented the power of men, and the Order obviously represented the power of women. Gemma had an epiphany in book three. She realized that her true enemy wasn't with the realms, but with real life, because her real life related to her life in the realms--the struggle with choice, power, and dignity.
I agree. It's so much better written than Twilight. It's more intelligent as well. It's easy to read--to me, anyway--but you often have to read between the lines to understand what every little thing means--Bray's genius and yeas of research!
I loved her use of allegorical references.
"When given a choice, the sheep seem to be confused."
I loved that metaphorical reference.
But my most favorite from the book is this:
"There are no safe choices, only others."
It made me realize how true that is, that safety's only an illusion.
EDIT: Actually, only Gemma had power. Everyone else could only obtain it through the realms. In fact, the girls were really powerless. You have to understand that those books took place in the 19th century, so things were far different. And I think the trilogy is more realistic because there is not love at first sight. There is a balance of tragedy and joy--like there is in real life. Whereas Bella's life seems to be too full of tragedy--to her, anyway.|||I finished the whole series in about a month, and I also loved it. The plot was great and I couldn't put the book down since I was on the edge of my seat the whole entire time.
I definitely agree that it was better than Twilight. Stephanie Myers isn't able to transfer her stories well through her writing like Libba Bray did with the Gemma Doyle trilogy.|||I read it. I thought it had a little too much of the fairy tale factor. How many books can we read about charming girls in boarding schools with magical powers?
That said, they were very good books. I think I personally prefer Twilight because it's a little more modern and a little more believable, but to each her own.|||I liked them. Not as much as Twilight, but definitely the top ten. Here is what I thought....
A Great and Terrible Beauty- my favorite of the three. LIked the little bit of horror suspense and romance. LIked the whole idea really. Kept me wanting to read
Rebel Angels- eh. Not so sure. It was good, I still completed it. Still with in the top ten.
The Sweet Far Thing- porr Kartik... that is all I have to say. And Pippa..... awww.|||I loved the Gemma Doyle trilogy. It has mystery, romance, magic, and so much more. I found it hard to put down.|||I liked it too! It is far better written than Twilight. The series has this really captivating, eerie feel going on. It's like...a cross between A Little Princess and Harry Potter.
Good stuff!
