I am currently reading Rebel Angels, and I have just passed the part in the stables when Kartik kisses Gemma. However, she stops him, and he asks if it's because he's Indian and she replies that she doesn't even think of him as an Indian. It's very clear that he's been insulted, but I don't understand how. If someone could explain to me why what she said was insulting, I'd really appreciate it. Thanks!|||She's still basically saying she doesn't think indians are equal with the english. She's saying she thinks of Indians as lesser beings. She loves Kartik, so she doesn't think of him that way, but she still feels like his people are inferior to English.|||It's said many times in the books how the English consider Indians "as low as dogs". So, when she says she doesn't think of him as Indian, he's insulted because she seemed to say something along the lines of, "I don't think of you as a person."

It took me a while to get, and her comment was well meant. He seems smart enough to get what she was going for... Plus, that isn't why she stopped the kiss anyway. She didn't mean to insult him at all.
