I read the book and forget why did they live in india|||It's never really said: John Doyle- Gemma's father and Virginia Doyle's husband. After Virginia's death, he is so bereaved he develops an addiction to laudanum. Gemma tries to make the pain go away, but then he becomes addicted to opium. At the end of The Sweet Far Thing he is diagnosed with tuberculosis and moves back to India, where he lived in the beginning of A Great and Terrible Beauty.|||He's a druggie.
